The swimwear designer and CEO of Moana Swim revealed that she used to be so bothered by her cellulite that she edited her photos to smooth out the “imperfections.” But now, Karina embraces her natural appearance and encourages other women to do the same.
“Every day I would look at myself in the mirror and cry. Why am I like this!? What’s wrong with me!? […] I edited my skin to look ‘normal’ so that I could live an edited fantasy of what I wanted to be in real life. A girl with a normal appearance. [..] Keep sharing the good and the bad. Keep doing your best. Keep being the role model you needed when you were younger. Thank you for giving me space to be the true me.”
Irby also stated that growing up with chronic skin issues and suffering bullying because of it deeply affected her self-esteem. She also pointed out that the pressure from retouched magazine images and media in the 2000s contributed to her insecurity.
By exposing her unfiltered reality, Karina hopes to be a role model of acceptance that she herself needed when she was younger.
“No one cares about your cellulite except you. Stop letting your glorious womanly bumps keep you from living your life to its fullest potential.”
